Sitting proudly on Wauskeag Point, West Cove is a striking Victorian cottage that evokes memories of carefree summers by the sea of days gone by. Located in the heart of this vibrant summer community, the light-filled home retains its original charm and delightful period details, such as large front porch with stone arches, hand-carved woodwork, a butler’s pantry with copper sink, and five wood-burning fireplaces. The hardwood floors on the main level were recently refinished and a beautiful new Master Bathroom was added this past summer. Most rooms have peaks of the ocean while the fourth-story tower room offers breathtaking panoramic views of West Cove, Sullivan Harbor and across Frenchman Bay to Bar Harbor and the mountains of Acadia. Beautiful grounds with lovely cutting garden and mature trees, including a gorgeous Copper Beech. West Cove is one of Sorrento’s original summer cottages and is an often photographed local landmark. Originally called Rock End Cottage, it was built for the mistress of Frank Jones – a wealthy brewer and industrialist who helped develop Sorrento’s summer community in the late 19th century. West Cove was later used as a hotel and a town community center before being converted back to a private home in the 1960s. Renovate to your taste or enjoy as it is.
About the Area:
Sorrento, named after the coastal town in Italy, has much to offer – including a 9-hole golf course, a yacht club, tennis and croquet courts, and wonderful ocean access. The community was founded in the late 1800s as a summer resort and was once home to a grand hotel with steamship service from Boston and summer ferries to Bar Harbor. The village is a short drive to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and Ellsworth amenities.
