You asked – we delivered!
Along with an extensive list of available properties for sale, The Knowles Company has an equally impressive database of seasonal and winter rental homes (along with the occasional year round home). In a recent survey of previous seasonal renters, we asked what would make the rental search process easier and faster for them. They said it would be helpful to search with certain criteria, like pet-friendly and availability by date.
Each property is unique in its size, location, and personality so to help you with your search and to make it successful and streamlined, we have updated our website with advanced search features! Need a four-bedroom, waterfront home with dock privileges? How about ten bedrooms, pet-friendly, off-island? Do you really have your heart set on that second week in August for the family reunion? Planning a wedding and need multiple properties? Do the teenagers need to be within walking distance of the dock for sailing? No worries! Just plug in your criteria and BAM – multiple properties to choose from!
On our webpage just click on the Vacation Rental link and select all valid criteria from the drop downs on the menu on the left-hand side of the page. Are you looking for a specific week, type of lodging, number of bedrooms, or location ? Put together your specific wish list and hit Search for a complete and accurate result. You have finally arrived and unlocked your vacation home. Time to bring in provisions. On Mount Desert Island, you will find that every town has a large grocery store and there are also numerous markets and farm stands. The variety is amazing – natural foods, ethnic foods, specialty foods and farm to grocery. Not to mention over one hundred restaurants across the island to tantalize every foodie.
If you are planning on a physically active vacation, your options (and needed equipment) will vary. If you plan to hike, consider bringing sturdy hiking boots with great ankle support – the trails (though beautifully maintained) are designed to be as natural as possible and you will encounter roots, rocks, and uneven surfaces. If water is more your thing, there are lakes and ponds for swimming, fishing, and boating. Don’t forget to bring along appropriate flotation for yourself and the family.
Bicycling in Acadia and on Mount Desert Island is also very popular. The main roads can be narrow and crowned so be cautious and follow the rules of the road, map out your trip and wear appropriate and reflective clothing and a helmet. The carriage roads of Acadia offer a firm, dirt surface and no vehicle traffic but you will still encounter runners, walkers, strollers and the occasional horse so again, follow the rules of the road and respect each other. Visit the many Chamber of Commerce sites as well as the Acadia National Park website for more information and guidance and visit our Resources page for even more information!
Although paradise for outdoorsmen, Mount Desert Island offers every level of activity for every personality! Movies, galleries, museums, boutiques, spas – everything you need in a setting that is peaceful and relaxing.
Weather in Maine can be somewhat unpredictable so pack for sun, rain, wind, and chilly evenings. In the early part of the summer/spring we can get a fair amount of rain and cool evenings but nothing an extra layer can’t fix.
Summer typically brings perfect temps and lots of sun, great weather for anything you can come up with to do! Always keep an umbrella or raincoat in your car, and always wear sunscreen. The sun may not seem as strong here when you feel cooled by the ocean breeze, but it is, and can be especially intense when you are hiking or are on or near the water.
